Tackling Ghostwriting Problems: Day 6 Insights
D

I am a Content and Technical Writer driven by my enthusiasm for the web3 space and cryptocurrency

While writing, there could be interference, especially on the emotional path; this is why writers are told not to overstretch themselves to be at the maximum performance level.

Well, what if the source of the turmoil is not external but internal, coming from clients?

What if a minor mistake could lead to a tarnished reputation and emotional imbalance?

A lot of what-ifs arise when it comes to the downside of writing and a feeling of mere average performance.

I love writing because I get to express myself without actually speaking, and I help clients who have the same desire to do so.

However, in a situation where I feel I may have underperformed and a void in me is yet to be filled, I beat myself up, and I believe some great writers out there feel the same way.

You might feel there’s no reason for such a situation to come up, well, think twice because Ghostwriting paves the way for certain limitations.

Some of which include:

1. Misalignment of Voice and Style

  • Problem: Ghostwriters may struggle to accurately capture the authentic voice or tone of the credited author.

  • Result: Rewrites or heavy editing might be needed, increasing time and cost.

2. Limited Subject Matter Expertise

  • Problem: Ghostwriters may lack deep knowledge of the topic, especially in technical or niche fields.

  • Result: Leads to inaccuracies or superficial content, requiring corrections by the actual expert.

3. Communication Gaps

  • Problem: Inefficient or infrequent communication between the ghostwriter and the author.

  • Result: Missed expectations, unclear direction, and delays.

4. Time-Consuming Feedback Loops

  • Problem: Iterative review processes can drag on when expectations aren't clearly defined.

  • Result: The process becomes inefficient due to back-and-forth edits.

While these stand as paths to inefficiency, there is always room for improvement as all problems have gor solutions.

Handling The Inefficiencies

Let us take a look at how to deal with the issues faced in the ghostwriting niche:

🧩 1. Misalignment of Voice and Style

Problem: The ghostwriter can't capture the client’s authentic tone.

Solution:

  • Voice profiling: Study emails, interviews, blog posts, etc. Break down how they talk, not just what they say.

  • Record conversations: Transcripts are goldmines for capturing rhythm and personality.

  • Create a “Voice Bible”: Keep notes on their tone (e.g., casual vs. polished), go-to phrases, favorite topics, and quirks.

➡️ Result: Fewer rewrites, better client satisfaction, and writing that feels like them.

2. Limited Subject Matter Expertise

Problem: The ghostwriter isn’t a domain expert, leading to weak or inaccurate content.

Solution:

  • Targeted research: Go beyond Wikipedia—dig into the client’s go-to sources, industry-specific podcasts, reports, etc.

  • Ask smarter questions: Don't just ask “What should this say?” Ask “What misconceptions do people have about this?” or “What’s your take no one else is saying?”

  • Build a personal knowledge base: Over time, accumulate a go-to bank of facts, metaphors, stats, and terminology.

➡️ Result: More credible, insightful writing without needing micromanagement from the client.

📡 3. Communication Gaps

Problem: Infrequent or unclear communication causes misfires.

Solution:

  • Set clear expectations upfront: Timeline, tone, audience, key takeaways.

  • Use structured check-ins: Weekly calls, shared doc comments, or voice memos.

  • Create a brief for every piece: Who’s it for? Why now? What's the takeaway?

➡️ Result: Less ambiguity, faster approvals, and tighter alignment.

4. Time-Consuming Feedback Loops

Problem: Too many revisions slow everything down.

Solution:

  • Submit outlines first: Get alignment before writing full drafts.

  • Clarify what type of feedback you want: “Am I capturing your voice?” “Does the structure work?”

  • Version control: Keep clean drafts and track changes to simplify decision-making.

➡️ Result: Less guesswork, fewer back-and-forth rounds.

With these, you can have more practical control in difficult underperformance situations.

Try these out, champs, and share results!

See you tomorrow!

From what I read, I understood it’s more beneficial to go beyond the surface of the topic, project or idea so as to get a really broader perspective.

Thank you!
